Hello, everyone. Today we’ll take you to Bruer Island, the new paradise in the Myanmar waters.
Bruer Island, or Saung Guat in Burmese, means a Burmese harp. The name’s given due to the shape of the island that resembles a Burmese mandolin when it’s seen from a bird’s eye view. It’s not difficult at all to get to the island as there are ferries available at a pier in Ranong.
One day before we travel, Mamy Booking calls us to confirm our itinerary and to inform us that there’d be a car picking us up at our hotel. After the trip is confirmed, we prepared ourselves for the journey.
In the morning of the next day, we get ready and wait at the hotel’s lobby for a pick-up. If you stay in Ranong city, Mamy Booking would send a van to pick you up for free at the hotel to the pier. The van starts picking up from 7am until 7:45am, depending on the location of the hotel. The ride takes only 10 minutes until we arrive at the pier. For those who travel with their own cars, they can find the pier by looking for the Seastar Ranong Pier or Keing Lay Restaurant on Google Maps application. The parking space is free of charge.
This time we travel with Seastar, which is the only tour company allowed to operate on Bruer Island. Here below is an instruction on how to check in at the Seastar pier.
1. First, walk to the counter and check in. Tell the staff your name and you’d be given a wristband and a name tag. Don’t forget to provide the staff your identification card. Only hard-copies are accepted.
2. Hand the name tag to another officer to get diving equipment. Everyone would be provided their own bag that contains a towel, snorkel mask, breathing tube and scuba fins.
The check-in point is quite spacious with so many seats offered for tourists. Light snacks are offered there for those who haven’t had breakfast yet.
Twenty minutes before taking off, the staff inform us the schedule and regulations of the trip. Of course, we’re also told to preserve the natural values.
Let us summarize the trip for you again. This trip’s route is this:
If you’re looking for souvenirs or diving gears, you can get them here.
The assembly point offers an adequate number of clean restrooms. For those who are in need of a shower, they can also use a bathroom there too. Towels are provided there.
Before we get on the boat, our guide Toon tells us again about the plan of the day.
Before we take off to the islands, what’s not to forget is putting on sunscreen. It’s recommended to apply it before the trip for about half an hour. If possible, use those with high SPF (sun protection factor) to protect our skin from UV rays.
It’s 9am sharp and we’re ready. We hop on the three-engine speedboat, which will give us a ride for the rest of the day.
Fifteen minutes after the boat leaves the pier, we arrive in Kawthaung, which is in fact not an island but the southernmost town of Myanmar. As the boat moves closer, we can see the architectural charm of Kawthaung buildings.
We stop at Kawthaung to proceed documentation. Our guides take care of everything for us and it only takes about 30 minutes.
Then we move on for diving, finally! The day we travel is the 7th day of waxing moon. The water is quite still.
At around 11:20am, we finally arrive at the first diving spot called Ruby Star. Let’s go and explore.
At around 12:15pm, we move on to the next destination which is Bruer Island. The island is outstanding for its two parallel beaches which are connected to each other.
After diving for quite some time, our stomachs grumble. Don’t worry about food though because the food offered on the island is all-you-can-eat buffet. Seastar doesn’t disappoint us indeed.
After filling a stomach, it’s time to rest and relax. Feel free to find a cozy corner to sit down or walk along the beach to cherish the magnificent beauty.
At around 2pm the guide calls us to the boat for another diving trip at Bruer Island. The South Bruer is another diving spot where we can watch staghorn corals. The tides here are quite strong so we get easily exhausted.
Next destination is Zedetkyi Island. The spectacular stop offers the most coral reefs in the Myanmar sea. For those who want to see rare types of coral reefs or clownfish, they shouldn’t miss Zedetkyi Island.
See you again, beloved Bruer.
At 3:30pm, it’s time to head back to Ranong. We ride a speedboat for about an hour, then we stop at Kawthaung again to proceed a border pass.
We arrive safely at the pier at around 5pm before we return diving gears to the staff. Don’t say goodbye and rush out just yet because Seastar offers us a light meal before we leave.
The dishes include deep-fried chicken, sticky rice and spicy papaya salad of both kinds: traditional one and another with fermented fish and crabs.
We’d like to thank our tour guide and staff who take care of us throughout the journey. We’d totally come back when we have a chance.
